Competitions: Magic Hour Award


This year 16 films will compete for the Magic Hour Award and 4000 € in the mid-length documentaries. Jury members: Željka Sukova, Pawel Łoziński, Błażej Hrapkowicz.The award is funded by the Polish Film Institute.

Željka Sukova

Film director and visual artist. Born 1977 in Rijeka, Croatia, Željka studied Graphic Arts at Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and New Media at Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. “Marija’s Own” (2011) – “Świat Marii” – PLANETE+ DOC FF 2012 – was her docu-fiction-feature film debut. It had its world premiere at Hot Docs, Toronto and European premiere at Karlovy Vary IFF where it was awarded the Federation of Film Critics of Europe and the Mediterranean Award and was screened at more than 20 festivals including MOMA’s Documentary fortnight’s Gala closing night. “Winter/Miracle” (2012) a docu-fiction film coproduction co-directed by Gustavo Beck from Brazilwhich was awarded as the Best European documentary film at Jihlava IDFF.



Paweł Łoziński

Born December 4, 1965 in Warsaw. Graduate of the Directing Department at the Film School (PWSFTviT) in Lodz. Director, screenwriter, producer of documentaries and feature films. Lecturer at the Gdynia Film School. His adventure with film began with assisting his father, Marcel Łoziński. He was also an assistant director to Krzysztof Kieślowski during making “Trzy kolory. Biały” (“Three Colors: White”, 1993). Laureate of many film awards. His TV feature “Kratka” (“Grate”), starring Jerzy Kamas, won the Award for Best Debut at the Gdynia Film Festival in 1996. “Miejsce urodzenia” (“Place of Birth”, 1992) was awarded with the Programme One of Polish Public TV Award at the 1992 Europa Film Festival in Krakow, the Don Quijote Award of the Polish Federation of Film Societies, the White Cobra Grand Prix at the Media Festival “Man in Danger” in Lodz, the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco Film Festival, the First Prize at the Bornholm Film Festival as well as Grand Prix Vue sur les Docs at the Marseilles Film Festival. Equally acclaimed are his so called “everyday documentaries” – “Taka historia” (“Such a Story”) and “Siostry” (“Sisters”), both awarded with the Golden Hobby-Horse Award at the Krakow FF. “Ojciec i syn” (“Father and Son”, 2013) received the Special Jury Award at the IFF in Tehran, the Grand Prix for Best Documentary at the IFF in Minsk, the Saint George Award for Best Documentary at the IFF in Moscow, the Silver Horn Award for Best Documentary at the Krakow FF, the White Cobra Grand Prix at the “Man in Danger” Festival in Lodz and the Golden Grape Award at the Lubuskie Film Summer in Lagow.



Błażej Hrapkowicz

Film critic and culture expert. Graduated from the Polish Culture Institute of the Warsaw University. Editor of the Thursday programme “Playing Four Hands”, which he hosts in the Fourth Programme of the National Radio. He works for the “Cinema” monthly as well as dwutygodnik.com, filmweb.pl and “Fandor” portals. He has received the second prize in the Krzysztof Mętrak film critic contest. Nominated to the Polish Film Institute award in the film critic category. A passionate lover of Jean-Luc Godard, the Coen brothers, Bruce Springsteen and Jon Stewart. A fan of Manchester United and English football.
