About the film

The young Swedish director Anna Eborn’s Danish-produced debut “Pine Ridge” was earlier this year selected for the prestigious Venice Film Festival, and is screening here in a new and final version. “Pine Ridge” is shot at an Indian reservation of the same name in South Dakota, where Americans with Indian blood live a life in the middle – and yet outside – of American society. They call it a ghetto themselves and, as one of them says, “everyone would pack up and leave if they could”. A run-down, poor and vulnerable place like so many others in fringe USA, but nonetheless exotic enough to attract tourists who come to be shown around and visit the Wounded Knee Memorial Site. But Anna Eborn’s film is first and foremost a close-up portrait of especially the area’s younger generation, depicted on their own terms during a long and warm summer. Impressionistic and spontaneous, and with an ethnographically astute eye for the otherwise invisible but crucial details. One thing is sure for Lance Red Cloud, Kassel Sky, Cassandra Warrior, her little daughter Diamond Rose and their friends and families: the future is uncertain, and it less and less resembles the past of their roots.
