Sam Green is a San Francisco-based documentalist, author of, among others, the 2004 Oscar-nominated “The Weather Underground”. He’s also a creator of so called “live documentary” – documentary films presented live. His prior “Utopia in Four Movements” opened the eighth edition of PLANETE+ DOC in 2011 in Warsaw. Green’s live documentaries combine all the elements of a classic documentary – a captivating script, excellent cinematography, a rich soundtrack and the director’s interesting narration. They look, however, like a show of Green himself and his trio.

The subject of Green’s newest film, “The Measure of All Things”, is The Guinness Book of Records. The film comprises a series of portraits of record-holding people, places, and things, including the tallest man (7 feet 9 inches), the oldest living thing (a 5,000 year old Bristlecone Pine in Southern California), the man struck by lightning the most times (seven!), the oldest living person (116), and the woman with the world’s longest name, among others. Drawing inspiration equally from old travelogues, the Benshi tradition, and TED talks, “The Measure of All Things” will be screened with in-person narration and a live soundtrack.

“The Measure of All Things” score is composed and performed by Brendan Canty, T. Griffin and Catherine McRae. Canty is drummer and founding member for Fugazi and Rites of Spring and has been making music and producing records in Washington DC since 1980. Griffin is a noted film composer with over 30 films on his resume who has played with musical luminaries such as Vic Chesnutt, Tom Verlaine and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. He and Catherine McRae are based in Brooklyn and play together in The Quavers.

The world premiere of “The Measure of All Things” was at the Sundance festival in January 2014.
