Two seemingly different energies – Gnawa musical ritual and European improvisation – meet to find, through dialogue, common ground. Morocco-born Mokhtar Gania comes from a long line of Maallems, masters of the ritual instrument gimbri. Traditional Gnawa music, especially the lila derdeba rite, is to purify and protect from evil spirits. The most important element is the hypnotic music, leading to deep therapeutic dance trance.

Szpura and Zimpel, by performing with Gania, will not attempt to redo the rite, but to use it for improvising. However, it is not going to be the final goal. It will be the basis for searching of common grounds and contemporary contexts for traditional Gnawa songs.

Performers:
Maallem Mokhtar Gania – gimbri
Paweł Szpura – drums
Wacław Zimpel – clarinets
