About the film

America is an open book in Jonas Poher Rasmussen's semi-documentary road movie, where reality and fiction sway in a sensual “pas de deux” down the mythological highways. Bob Mason is a retired gentleman, who leaves the trailer park where he lives with his wife to go to Detroit, where his stolen car has just been found. In the glove compartment is a notebook, which becomes a highly intricate clue in the hunt for the mysterious fraudster and car thief, Bill – and for the meaning of life at the bottom of modern American society. Searching for Bill is a Danish take on a hybrid film, where the reality behind the images is enhanced by the contrasting minimal narrative, which is here simply summed up by the title. But it also joins a proud narrative tradition, which is fascinating thanks to its impressionistic depiction of America – not least as seen through the open eyes of a visitor. A sensitive, subtle and human film with its very own cinematic signature.
