Through a mix of news footage, TV-shows, archive footage and current interviews with key players, this rhythmic music documentary unravels the many threads of Tropicália – the colorful artistic movement that escalated in Brazil in the late 1960’s. Spanning through art, poetry and music, Tropicália was of great importance both aesthetically and politically.
In Tropicália we get to follow the stars of the movement – Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso – from the very spring of Tropicália until its shutdown by the Brazilian military junta only a few years later. Many of the artists sprung from the movement were forced into exile in London. This never before shown archive footage reveals this was a painful experience of loss and alienation.
A massive work has been put into the making of this film – the production started in 2006 – resulting in a mosaic of unique images and new interviews, fully grasping the extensive importance of the short but powerful movement known as Tropicália.
