About the film

“Jaurès” is the attentive daily record of a minute yet precious reinvention of the timeworn notions of love and politics we have inherited from the 20th century. In Jaurès, my neighbor is not my fellow creature, my lover is not my friend, my right is not my due and nothing is taken for granted. Everything is renegotiated day after day. Paris won’t always be Paris and one must grab on, hold tight, let nothing get away, remember it all, record and document. And so I’m able to prove it via film: we loved, fought and created in Eastern Paris at the dawn of the 21st century… Of course it’s not about comparing the situation of the canal refugees to my relationship with Simon. That would be ridiculous and obscene. It’s material life that has made this connection. The project is no less involved but is of a modest involvement (body and soul). What matters is showing a situation in its depths, temporality and fragility. “Not one minute, not one second which is not political”, said Marguerite Duras of her film “Le Camion” (“The Truck”), and she was right. It is also chance which has placed my film under the auspices of Jean Jaurès and a certain idea of the French left (that of Simon’s generation) which is crumbling today at the edges of politics, faced with the incredible violence of the future world.
